The court ordered an expedited hearing in the alleged terrorism/treasonable felony case and refuses Nnamdi Kanu bail.

Leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was denied bail by Federal High Court Abuja Judge Binta Nyako on Tuesday.

The court has directed an expedited hearing for the controversial IPOB leader, who is being charged with offenses that may be considered treasonous.

Kanu was brought before the court on Tuesday. Since his arrest in June 2021, he has been under the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Justice Nyako delivered the decision, declaring that the prosecution could only request an expedited hearing on the case and directing the prosecution to call its initial witness.

Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu's attorney, voiced his dissatisfaction with the decision. He stated that if the IPOB leader's legal team is not given a chance to communicate with their client, the procedures cannot continue.

Ejimakor continued, saying that it has been challenging to meet with Kanu while he is under the DSS's custody because their talks are constantly being recorded and because Kanu continues to wear the same clothing that the court has ordered be changed.

He stated that his client had been treated unfairly, which was against the Nigerian Constitution.

He communicated his displeasure with Kanu's legal team and requested a case standstill so they could speak with their client. The court complied.

Kanu was granted permission to address the court. He informed the court that while in the DSS's care, he has not been receiving the optimum care for his Cognitive Heart Disease. His requests to be transferred to Kuje jail or placed under house arrest were denied by Justice Nyako, who then postponed the case until April 17, 2024, when the trial is scheduled to begin.
