African Games: Amusan Wins The 100m Hurdles Title For The Third Time In A Row
Tobi Amusan won the gold medal in the women's 100-meter hurdles competition at the 2024 African Games in Ghana.
Amusan has won the African Games three times in a row with this triumph. Previously, the 26-year-old won gold in both the 2019 Rabat African Games and the 2015 Brazzaville African Games.
The world record holder finished well ahead of her rivals at the University of Ghana stadium in Accra on Wednesday, clocking in at 12.89 seconds.
Ashley Tinashe of Zimbabwe and Sidoane Fiadanantsoaso of Mozambique won bronze and silver, respectively.
Amusan was in danger of being disqualified when her initial effort at starting the race resulted in a false start. But instead of giving her a warning, the officials gave her a yellow card.
Amusan's stellar season began in February when she broke the record for African women's indoor 60-meter hurdles.
Chidi Okezie won gold in the men's 400-meter race with a time of 45.06 seconds.
With a time of 45.37 seconds, Samukonga Muzala of Zambia took second place, and Diouf Tidiane of Senegal took home the bronze.
Okezie's result was a significant improvement over the bronze medal he took home from Rabat in 2019.
Joseph Esther also took home the silver medal in the 400-meter women's competition. Kenyan Mari Moraa beat her to the gold with a time of 50.57 seconds.
