Acclaimed Actor of ‘Squid Game' Found Guilty Of Sexual misconduct
The “Squid Game” actor from South Korea, O Yeong-su, was accused of assaulting a woman in 2017, but a local court declared on Friday that he had been found guilty of sexual misconduct.
The 79-year-old made history in 2022 when he won the Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a television series for his portrayal of an elderly man who seemed fragile in the wildly popular dystopian drama on Netflix.
According to the Suwon District Court, the occurrences happened in front of the victim's house and on a walking route in 2017 while 0 was visiting a rural location for a theater performance.
“Squid Game,” a Netflix series that imagines a dystopian society in which marginalized people are made to play lethal versions of classic children's games, became incredibly popular very fast.
It drew an astounding 111 million viewers in less than four weeks after its 2021 debut.
The show's success has amplified South Korea's increasingly outsized influence on global popular culture, following global fame won by the likes of K-pop band BTS and the Oscar-winning film “Parasite.”
Actor Cho Jae-hyun and late filmmaker Kim Ki-duk are two prominent people in South Korea's film industry who have been accused of sexual assault.
