Tinubu Directs The Release Of Food Reserves In Order To Increase Supply
The National Strategic Food Reserves will release 102,000 metric tonnes of rice and maize immediately, as approved by President Tinubu, to increase food availability.
To address the growing food scarcity in the nation, President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate release of 42,000 metric tons of various foods from the strategic reserve and the Nigerian Rice Millers Association.
The directive was made public by Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris on Thursday following a meeting of the Special Presidential Committee on Emergency Food Intervention.
According to the minister, the government has suggested importing any shortages that might arise following the release of the food commodities.
He continued by saying that food hoarders would face consequences from the government, emphasizing that in an emergency, action must be taken to guarantee that Nigerians have access to food.
The growing expense of living in the nation prompted a meeting of the presidential committee on emergency food intervention on February 6 at the presidential villa in Abuja.
Femi Gbajabiamila, the president's chief of staff (CoS), called a meeting of the committee.
National security adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Yemi Cardoso, education minister Tahir Mamman, finance minister Wale Edun, agriculture minister Abubakar Kyari, and minister of state for agriculture Mustapha Shehuri were present at the meeting.
