The New NFIU Boss's Face, Ms. Hafsat Abubakar Bakari
President Tinubu Names Hafsat Bakare as the New NFIU Chief
Ms. Hafsat Abubakar Bakari has been appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the position of Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), subject to the Senate's confirmation.
The announcement of Bakare's appointment was made on Tuesday in a statement that Ajuri Ngelale, the president's spokesperson, signed.
Senate confirmation of her nomination is pending. If verified, she will take over for Modibbo Tukur, who was fired in July of 2023. Prior to her nomination, Ms. Hafsat worked as a deputy director at the NFIU.
The Nigerian federal agency in charge of gathering and examining disclosures from reporting entities in order to provide financial intelligence to other agencies fighting financial crimes such as money laundering and financing of terrorism is known as the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit.
Bakare held various leadership positions at the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, including Deputy Director, Head of the General Services Unit, Head of the Strategy and Reorientation Unit, and Head of the Board Secretariat of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), prior to her appointment as Chief Executive Officer of the NFIU.
Ms. Bakare is a financial intelligence specialist and attorney with years of experience in AML/CFT/CPF, or anti-money laundering, counterterrorism financing, and counterproliferation financing.
The President anticipates that Ms. Bakari will fully utilize her wealth of experience and knowledge in her new position, particularly in light of the administration led by Tinubu's fight against illicit financial flows.
