Nigeria Spends $1 Billion Purchasing 12 AH-1Z Viper Attack Helicopters From The United States
To strengthen Nigeria's military might, the US Department of Defense has verified a large arms sale to the West African country that includes 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters.
The $1 billion contract, which was awarded in December for a separate $7.7 million contract, includes 32 mission computers from Northrop Grumman in addition to the cutting-edge helicopters, according to reports.
Nigeria has long struggled with difficult security issues, such as the banditry in the northwest and the insurgency of Boko Haram in the northeast. The multifaceted crisis that has resulted in millions of displacement and innumerable deaths underscores the importance of Nigeria's military assets being upgraded with the scheduled June 2024 completion of the helicopter purchase.
Following the US State Department's approval of Nigeria's request for the helicopters in April 2022—which included night vision imaging systems, guidance systems, and comprehensive training—the sale took place. Enhancing Nigeria's security infrastructure, supporting common security goals, and fostering regional stability are the goals of this military package. The United States Defense Security Cooperation Agency emphasized how this sale will help the country achieve its national security and foreign policy goals by enhancing the security of a vital partner in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The multipurpose attack helicopter known as the AH-1Z Viper is intended to perform escort, strike, and reconnaissance missions. This development is a component of Nigeria's larger initiative to handle various security issues within its boundaries, such as the Islamist insurgency and pervasive banditry.
The acquisition of M-346 attack aircraft, T-129 ATAK helicopters, Agusta 109 Trekker multi-role helicopters, and Wing Loong II drones manufactured in China are all part of Nigeria's current military procurement strategy.
