Lagos To Penalise Home Owners Guilty Of Extorting Tenants
The Lagos State Government intends to impose penalties on homeowners who rent out their apartments at excessive rates.
Homeowners who are found to have rented out their apartments for excessive prices will face penalties, the Lagos State Government announced on Thursday.
According to a statement made by Housing Commissioner Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, allottees who engaged in harsh behavior would face harsh consequences from the government.
He adds that people who live in different state housing schemes have complained to the authorities about the excessive rent that homeowners are charging.
The state government will take away allocations from culpable homeowners, he continued. He remarked, “The essence of asking allottees to make a five per cent down payment and spread the remaining amount for ten years was to make life bearable for Lagosians.
“This is what Mr Governor wants to achieve, but some people seem to be taking Mr Governor's magnanimity for granted. They are renting those apartments out to make money. The question is why do people try to inconvenience others when the government intended to make life bearable for citizens?”
The commissioner gave an assurance that the State Government would keep providing outright purchase and rent-to-own platforms to meet the needs of first-time buyers who are in desperate need of such housing facilities. Engineer Abdulhafis Toriola, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Housing, stated that numerous complaints have been received from some estates alleging that certain homeowners harbor individuals of dubious character, thereby posing a risk to the residents.
He said that in order to protect the lives and well-being of those residing in the impacted estates, the ministry must look into the matter immediately and take appropriate action. In addition, the Permanent Secretary urged allottees to assume responsibility for joint facilities and abide by the regulations established to preserve the estates.
