Ighodalo wins, in a parallel Edo PDP governor primary

Prominent businessman Asue Ighodalo defeated other candidates, including Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, to win the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary for Edo State on Thursday. The election was held in Benin City.

Ighodalo got 577 votes in the exercise held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in the capital of Edo State, making him the official nominee of the state's ruling party for governor in the September 2024 election.

The financial and legal expert was declared the winner of the exercise by Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State and the Chairman of the Edo PDP Primary Electoral Committee.

“I, therefore, declare Asuelimen Ighodalo the winner of this concluded primary today with a total vote of 577. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen,” Governor Dauda who is the chief returning officer for the election said.

“Therefore, I hereby return him elected as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the upcoming election in Edo State. My brother, congratulations,” the governor flanked by his Delta State counterpart and co-chairman of the election committee Governor Sheriff Oborevwori said.

Shaibu got just one vote in the contest.

'I Will Be A Good Tool'

Ighodalo, accompanied by his spouse Ifeyinwa Ighodalo, thanked the PDP, delegates, and supporters during his acceptance speech. He was wearing a white kaftan.

“I am actually, totally humbled,” Ighodalo said. “I thank the good people of Edo State. In the last four months, I have got to meet them more,”  he added.

Godwin Obaseki, the current governor, was commended by Ighodalo for creating a solid foundation and for pledging to “give my all” for the state.

“I am only a tool in this process and I promise you all I will be a good tool. By the grace of God, Edo State will move from where Governor Obaseki stopped,” said the attorney, who is originally from Okaigben, Ewohimi, Esan South East Local Government Area, in the state.

It has been one month since Ighodalo threw himself into the race ring. Prior to his appearance, a faction within the party had proclaimed Shaibu as the PDP's nominee for governor in a separate election.
