Army Disproves Coup Plot To Challenge Tinubu
The Nigeria Army (NA) has refuted rumors of a potential coup attempt against President Bola Tinubu's democratically elected administration.
A report published by an online newspaper on Sunday regarding suspicions of a coup plot in Nigeria due to the dire economic circumstances was also labeled as “fake news.”
General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), had issued a warning to those advocating for a coup due to the nation's current economic hardship to refrain from doing so.
However according to an online newspaper, suspicious movements in Nigeria led to the Presidential Guards Brigade being placed on high alert due to possible coup attempts.
It stated to have learned exclusively on Sunday that President Tinubu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and Commander of the Presidential Guards Brigade, Col. Adebisi Onasanya, convened emergency meetings as a result of the suspicions.
“The Presidential Guards Brigade was placed on high alert after unusual armoured corps movement spurred coup suspicion.
“Last week, Col. Onasanya met with the President and Chief of Staff twice within 20 hours.”
The online newspaper said it had been informed by a top Presidency source that “they have also placed key brigades under watch due to planned protest.”
However, the Nigeria Army gave no further details when describing the report as “fake news” on its verified X handle on Sunday night.
The removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the Naira by President Tinubu's administration have caused tension in the nation due to rising inflation, the high cost of living, and current economic hardship. In the last two weeks, there have been spontaneous protests in a few cities across the nation.
The same economic conditions in the nation are also motivating the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to prepare for a two-day nationwide protest on February 27 and 28.
