The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, will be charged by the federal government on an amended 20-count charge today, Friday, January 18, 2024, in a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja.

The amended charges, dated January 17, 2024, were submitted on behalf of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) by Rotimi Oyedepo, three other attorneys, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria was charged with six counts of alleged fraudulent procurement by the government in August of 2023.

On November 22, 2023, Justice Hamza Muazu granted him bail after he entered a not guilty plea to the charges.

Judge Muazu's scheduled new arraignment was confirmed by EFCC prosecutor Oyedepo.

New counts pertaining to the fraudulent awarding of contracts to Emefiele's brother-in-law Omoile Macombo, his wife Omoile Margret, and other associates are included in the amended charge.

Among other things, the amended charge counts conspiracy to commit forgery, giving a corrupt advantage, and criminal breach of trust.

The court granted Emefiele's request to leave Abuja yesterday. But the court stipulated that Emefiele had to remain in the nation and follow the conditions of his bail, which limit his travel to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
