The first Executive Governor of Anambra State and Elder statesman, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, has passed away


The 85-year-old former governor of Anambra state, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, passed away



According to a statement from his family, Ezeife passed away on Thursday at around six o'clock in the evening.


The statement signed by Rob Ezeife reads; “On behalf of the Ezeife Dynasty of Igbo-Ukwu, I wish to announce the promotion to glory of our most distinguished son, Okwadike, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, CON, a former federal permanent secretary, the first executive governor of Anambra state, a former political adviser to the president and former presidential aspirant.

“This sad event took place yesterday at 6pm at the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja.


“More details about the deceased and the arrangements for his state burial will be announced later.”


Ezeife was elected governor of Anambra in 1992 on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), in Nigeria's third republic.


He held the position of governor until 1993, when former military leader Sani Abacha took over as the country's head of state.

A bachelor's degree in economics from University College Ibadan was earned by Ezeife, who also holds doctoral and master's degrees from Harvard University.


When Nigeria began its fourth republic in 1999, former President Olusegun Obasanjo also named him special adviser on political matters.
