The country's constitution cannot be overridden or superseded by public opinion, according to Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

On Wednesday, October 3, the CJN made this statement when installing a new group of 23 judges for the Federal High Court of Nigeria at the Supreme Court in Abuja.

He claims that when deciding matters, the court always follows the law, especially the Constitution. Therefore, he commanded all judges in the nation to always uphold constitutional provisions when making decisions in any cases that might be entrusted to them.

"Several vitriolic attacks are regularly heaped on the Judiciary; it is, however, crystal clear that public opinion, no matter how serious or weighty it might be, cannot override or supersede the Constitution of the country, which we apply in deciding each case," he said.
