Some Politicans Lost The 2023 General Elections Due To Their Inability To Contribute Financially - EFCC

Some politicians lost the 2023 general elections, according to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), because they had no money to divide.

Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC's head of media and publicity, mentioned this during a recent online program.

Recall that during the elections, there were extremely few Naira notes in circulation as a result of the Central Bank of Nigeria's (CBN) Naira redesign strategy.

According to Daily Trust, he said that the lack of currency during elections—which resulted from the CBN's naira redesign policy—was to blame for the violence since politicians could not buy votes.

Some leaders were defeated in elections in their strongholds, which was impossible because they lacked the resources to do so.

Particularly, Uzoukwu claimed that the voting records for the states of Rivers and Sokoto had been unavailable. Uzoukwu claimed that the INEC authorities in Sokoto state requested a cost of N1.5 million to process the documents.

"A typical example is that of Rivers state, where the resident electoral commissioner boldly told us they do not have any form EC8A to give us," the senior advocate said.

Responding to the allegation, INEC's lawyer said: "We agreed to meet on Monday and Tuesday (15 and 16 May). But on Monday, May 15, I received a call that the Labour Party legal team had not turned up at the venue for the inspection of the documents.

LP was given some electoral documents in Rivers, but they insisted on collecting all the documents that were required. The commission has not refused to produce any document."
