U.K. CONSIDERS RESTRICTIONS AS NIGERIAN MIGRANTS ACCOUNT FOR HIGHEST NUMBER OF DEPENDANTS

Due to the high number of dependents among Nigerian migrants, the United Kingdom is considering restrictions

As Nigerian migrants bring in the most dependents, the United Kingdom is considering tightening the restrictions on the number of relatives visitors can bring with them.

According to the DailyMail, UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman is thinking about tightening the regulations on dependents after figures revealed a startling disparity between the nationalities who came to the UK to work and study.

In spite of the fact that Nigerian students made up just 7% of all foreign students during that time, the report reveals that Nigerians made up 40% of all dependents who traveled with foreign students in the year leading up to June.

The UK granted study visas to about 34,000 Nigerians, who brought with them 31,898 dependents in total. In the year leading up to June, 8,972 Nigerians were granted work visas, and they brought 8,576 dependents with them.

"In the year ending June 2022, 486,868 Sponsored study visas were granted (to both main applicants and their dependants), 71% (202,147) more than in 2019," a Home Office spokesman said.
