SYMBOLIC STATUS OF ISI-AGU

In the perception of Igbo people, Isi-agu attire is an aspect of African indigenous cloth which they wear through the mediation of its symbolic functions in order to create meaning for life and general well-being of Igbo culture.

The Isi-agu, a distinct pull over tunic shirt, widely popular with the over 55 million Igbos of Eastern Nigeria is a cultural phenomenon that expresses and accentuates the Igbo values of strength, courage and nobility. The design of lion’s head is what brought the name “ISI-AGU.” The Isi-agu attire is part and parcel of the traditional Igbo man.

In recent times, fashion experts have found a way to bring it back in vogue. Majorly of red color, it can also come in various colors and designs, it signifies riches, comfort and courage by the wearer.

The Igbo Isi-agu has been around for centuries, it can be worn complete like an up and down or as a traditional up with a plain or patterned trouser to match.
The shirt is usually worn with red fez hat or the Igbo leopard cap. The leopard cap is known as Okpu Agu in the Igbo language – it can be worn by men and women. However, the shirt may be long or short sleeved. Some shirts have gold buttons that are linked by a chain. There is usually a breast pocket on the front.

The Igbo worn it with more swagger and prestige, in many vibrant colors and added the distinct Leopard (Agu) head. The Leapard head has since disappeared in favor of Lion (Odum) head, again for practical reasons. The Igbos have since immemorial say, “Odum na egbu agu” (A lion kills a leopard). Thus Odum ranks higher than Agu.

Traditionally, once upon a time Isi-agu was considered a royal attire and was used to measure wealth. The Isi-agu was given to a man when he received a Chieftaincy title – the wearing of Isi-agu attire in the time past was only restricted to only the titled Chiefs and as such it constitutes part of the essential tools through which the people understand who they are and maintain Igbo identity.

Latterly, although the titled men still wear them, it has also been used to represent prominent occasions such as wedding ceremonies or coronations and the likes.
Moreover, today, Isi-agu is still considered a bold fashion statement and not restricted to men of royalty. It is also now associated with the rich and affluent – though it can be worn by everyone and not just high achieving Igbo men. Men, women and children can adorn different colors.

Every Nigerian man is expected to have at least one of these Nigerian native attire styles in his wardrobe. Whether you are from Nigeria or other continents of the world, this is one fabric that will make you look awesome as a man. People from around the world have been dressed in Isi-agu, world star Nigerian-American Rapper, Wale once shared a picture of him on his Instagram page adorning Isi-agu for one of numerous projects, and the appearance was mind blowing.
