Six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek opened her Wuhan Open run with a commanding 6-2, 6-1 victory over fellow Pole Magdalena Frech in an all-Polish first-round clash on Wednesday.
The win marked Swiatek's 40th of the season in just one hour and 42 minutes, keeping her on track for a potential quarter-final meeting with top seed and three-time Wuhan champion Aryna Sabalenka.
Even with the one-sided final score, the first set was a battle that lasted over an hour. Swiatek had to fight back from 0-2 down and save seven of eight break points before finally closing out the set on her fourth set point.
Dialing up the pressure with her relentless forehand, Swiatek reeled off a 10th consecutive game to race to a 4-0 lead in the second set.
“We know each other pretty well, so I just wanted to focus on being consistent and playing as good as possible,” Swiatek, the seventh seed, said of Frech.
“I know she is running to every ball always and sometimes using the power of the opponent, so I wanted to not play too crazy but play solid and I’m happy that I did that,” said Swiatek, who is chasing a qualification spot for the year-end WTA Finals.
The former world No. 1 suffered a brief dip as Frech broke back, but she quickly regrouped to seal her place in the round of 16, where she will face either lucky loser Lanna Tararudee or Ashlyn Krueger.
