The Buffalo Bills have stayed hot to start 2026, and although the Los Angeles Rams pushed them to the limit, Buffalo outlasted them in an overtime thriller, 37-34.
Week 5 of the NFL delivered plenty of drama, and with every game starting to shape the playoff race, a heavyweight clash on Monday Night Football promised to be no different.
The Bills (4-1) and Rams (2-3) entered the new season as genuine Super Bowl contenders, and on Monday many felt they were watching a potential Super Bowl preview. It delivered from the opening snap, and while both Josh Allen and Matthew Stafford started, it was the veteran who stole the show.
Stafford finished the night with 383 yards on 40-of-54 passing with three touchdowns, while Allen's impact through the air was limited. Buffalo instead leaned on James Cook for 111 rushing yards, with Allen adding an impressive 121 yards on the ground himself.
Early on, the Rams' passing attack was firing on all cylinders, while the Bills were content to ground and pound their way to success on the road. After three quarters, it was a tight 19-14 lead for Buffalo.
Then the fourth quarter came alive. The two teams traded scores down the stretch before the Rams put together a quick six-play, 1:34 drive late in the fourth to tie it up, sending the game to overtime at 34-34.

Overtime was tense, with both teams getting chances to drive down the field and win it. With less than three minutes left in the extra period, there was still no breakthrough.
Then the momentum shifted. The Rams drove deep and set up a 48-yard field goal to win it, but Gregory Rousseau came up as the hero for Buffalo, blocking the kick and giving the Bills excellent field position.

From there, it was all Josh Allen, as the Bills still had some work to do to clinch this one, and with back-to-back plays of 19 and 13 yard runs from the former MVP, he had them in perfect position to finish off a dramatic, back-and-forth contest.
Obviously, after the block at the other end, nothing was going to be elementary, but in the biggest moment, Tyler Bass stepped up and iced the game, much to the relief of Allen, who played a crucial role in sealing this one for the Bills to go to 4-1 on the season.

The defeat drops the Rams to 2-3, but their three losses have come in Australia to the undefeated 49ers, on the road in Denver, and now against Josh Allen and the Bills. Despite the record, both teams are still expected to be in the Super Bowl mix, and there are plenty of positives for Los Angeles to take.
Ultimately, though, Monday belonged to Buffalo. Behind Allen's legs and a huge play on special teams, the Bills came out on top in a dramatic shootout, with the NFL saving its best for last in a stacked Week 5 slate.
