Lyon edge past Nice to go top of Ligue 1 despite late red card...
Reduced to ten men for the final 20 minutes, Lyon held on for a 2-1 home victory over Nice to climb above Paris Saint-Germain to the top of Ligue 1.
It was a slow-burning encounter, with the opening 15 minutes proving cagey and littered with strong, physical challenges across the pitch.
Nice needed only one opportunity to go ahead though, and Elye Wahi provided a clinical finish in the 18th minute, steering Jonathan Clauss' pinpoint cross from the right first-time into the net. Lyon responded well, with Kail Boudache testing Yehvann Diouf with a fierce strike that stung his palms.
Diouf dealt well with that effort, but he was at fault for the equaliser in the 32nd minute. Johan Duranville cut inside from the left and fired low, and while the Nice keeper should have held it, he spilled it straight to Pavel Sulc who finished smartly to make it 1-1.
Paulo Fonseca’s side were not done there, though, and four minutes later they turned the game on its head. Their second goal came from Tanner Tessmann, as the American midfielder rose highest to power home a superb cross from Zachary Athekame, giving Lyon a lead they held until half-time.
The first real opening of the second half arrived seven minutes after the restart, again from a dangerous Clauss delivery. This time captain Axel Witsel met his corner with a thumping header that crashed off the crossbar.
Olivier Pantaloni’s side kept pushing for a leveller, but efforts from Mohamed Amoura and Gauthier Hein failed to test Remy Descamps. However, Lyon were dealt a blow on 70 minutes when substitute Keito Nakamura on the pitch for less than 10 minutes caught Mohamed Abdelmonem with a high boot and was shown a straight red card.

Les Aiglons almost made their man advantage count immediately through Wahi, but the frame of the goal came to Lyon’s rescue once more as his header struck the post. Nice kept pushing until the very end and Wahi thought he had snatched a stoppage-time equaliser, only for his wild celebrations to be cut short by the tightest of offside calls.
That brings Nice’s mini revival to an end at two wins, leaving them 13th, while Lyon are one of four teams tied on 14 points at the top but their superior goal difference sends them to the summit, having now won five of their last six meetings with the Côte d’Azur outfit.
