Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts will miss Sunday’s game vs. the Panthers after a follow-up ultrasound revealed movement in a small superficial blood clot in his calf. Full timeline and what it means for the team.

Another blow for the Birds, Jalen Hurts out against Panthers due to blood clot...

Philadelphia, October 15, 2026 — Just when it felt like the Philadelphia Eagles might be steadying the ship after a rocky start, another curveball landed squarely in the locker room. On Thursday, the team announced that star quarterback Jalen Hurts will miss Sunday’s home game against the Carolina Panthers due to a “superficial blood clot.”

The news dropped like a cleat to the calf, which, ironically, is exactly where this whole saga began.

How We Got Here

It started quietly enough. During the Eagles’ Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on October 4, Hurts took a cleat to his calf. He didn’t make a big deal of it at the time. He practiced fully the following Wednesday and Thursday. Only after that Thursday practice did he visit the training room and request treatment, telling the staff about the earlier contact.

By Friday he was still practicing in full and landed on the injury report with a calf designation. Then came the long flight to London for the Week 5 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Out of an abundance of caution, the team ordered an ultrasound after the plane landed and the walkthrough. The scan revealed a small superficial blood clot.

Medical staff on both sides of the Atlantic reviewed the images and decided the best course was continued activity and mobility. Hurts was cleared to play. He went the distance in London 21-of-40 for 220 yards and a touchdown in a heartbreaking 19-17 defeat and looked largely unaffected.

Back home, treatment continued Monday and Tuesday. Hurts practiced fully again on Wednesday. That night, a follow-up ultrasound showed the clot had moved. Suddenly the risk-reward calculation shifted. The Eagles shut him down for Sunday.

“His health and safety are our highest priority,” the team said in its official statement. They’ve been in contact with the league office throughout the process.

What It Means For Sunday

For the first time in a long while, the Eagles will take the field without their franchise quarterback. Tanner McKee is expected to get the start against a Panthers team that has been playing solid football. The Lincoln Financial Field crowd will still show up loud, but the energy will carry a different edge part hope, part anxiety.

A superficial clot is generally less dangerous than a deep-vein thrombosis, but movement of any clot is taken seriously. The team is now determining the “appropriate course of treatment,” which could range from blood thinners and rest to more aggressive monitoring. No timeline for Hurts’ return has been given.

The Bigger Picture

This is the latest chapter in what has become a frustrating season for the Birds. Injuries have piled up, the offense has looked inconsistent, and every week seems to bring a new obstacle. Losing Hurts even for one game removes the dual-threat engine that makes the Eagles offense uniquely dangerous.

Yet if there’s one thing this team has shown over the years, it’s resilience. The locker room has weathered worse storms. Fans will be watching closely not just for the scoreboard Sunday, but for any update on their quarterback’s recovery.

For now, the message from the NovaCare Complex is clear: Jalen’s health comes first. The football can wait.

Fly, Eagles, Fly… carefully.
