Bundesliga: Demichelis' Leipzig Respond in Style With Four-Goal Rout of Elversberg
| Romulo brace seals emphatic Leipzig win over high-flying Elversberg |
Second-half goals from Tidiam Gomis, Romulo Cardoso and Christoph Baumgartner saw RB Leipzig beat Elversberg 4-0 and leapfrog them in the Bundesliga table.
Leipzig hit four after halftime to thrash Elversberg and enter top five...
RB Leipzig extended their club-record run of Bundesliga home victories to nine games with a dominant 4-0 win over Elversberg in Saxony, climbing above their opponents in the standings.
Unbeaten at the Red Bull Arena this season but yet to pick up a point on the road in the Bundesliga, Leipzig came into the match on the back of a difficult week that saw them ship 10 goals in heavy defeats to European giants Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
The after-effects of those heavy losses appeared to linger as Leipzig made a muted start at home, failing to look threatening until the 25th minute when Antonio Nusa drifted in from the left and lifted a curling effort over the crossbar.
Elversberg have been one of the most prolific promoted sides in recent history, with only two newcomers in the last 50 years netting more than their 12 goals in the first six games of a debut Bundesliga season, and they looked the more dangerous side going forward in the first half.
The only effort on target before halftime came from Vincent Wagner's team, as David Mokwa's powerful volley from distance was superbly kept out by Leipzig keeper Orjan Nyland.
Having made eight changes from the side beaten by Real Madrid, Leipzig were booed off at the break, giving manager Martin Demichelis plenty to think about before the second half.
Die Roten Bullen answered in emphatic fashion, needing just three minutes after the restart to take the lead when a slick move down the left saw Nusa cut the ball back for Tidiam Gomis, who met it first-time and fired home for his second goal in consecutive games.
Elversberg found it hard to hit back and might have gone further behind when a superb long throw from Nyland sent Gomis clear on the counter, only for the Frenchman to be denied a second by a crucial save from the outstretched leg of goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof.
Leipzig would not be kept out for long, though, and doubled their advantage in the 66th minute through substitute Romulo Cardoso, who slipped the ball through Kristof's legs after being played in behind by Nusa.
Elversberg should have pulled one back straight away, but Frederik Schmahl fired over, and the contest was effectively ended by Christoph Baumgartner, who celebrated his first Bundesliga outing of the season by nodding in from Brajan Gruda's cross.

Already well beaten, Elversberg conceded once more in stoppage time when substitute Abdoul Kone regained possession and produced a superb backheel to set up Romulo, who turned the ball home from close range.
The defeat leaves the visitors with just one victory in their last nine away league games, while Leipzig stretched their all-time Bundesliga unbeaten run against promoted clubs to 41 matches and moved into the top five.
