Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield Returns Sunday Against Carolina
Baker Mayfield is set to return for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers against the Carolina Panthers after missing three games with a dislocated right thumb.
Baker Mayfield to Play vs. Panthers after dislocated thumb injury...
The Buccaneers’ starting quarterback will be back under center Sunday in Charlotte for the Week 7 NFC South matchup. Head coach Todd Bowles confirmed Friday that Mayfield “looks like he’s ready to go” after a full week of practice. Mayfield himself had said a day earlier that the thumb feels “strong enough to be able to play.”
How the injury happened
Mayfield suffered the dislocation late in the fourth quarter of Tampa Bay’s 23-16 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 27. On a desperation fourth-down throw, his throwing hand collided with Vikings linebacker Blake Cashman. The pass was intercepted, and Mayfield left the field in visible pain. An MRI showed no fracture and no ligament or tendon damage severe enough to require surgery, but the dislocation still needed time to heal. Initial projections had him sidelined three to six weeks.
He sat out the next three games. Undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels stepped in and went 1-2 as the starter, completing roughly 60-61% of his passes for about 501 yards with three touchdowns and four or five interceptions (including his brief appearance in the Vikings game). The Buccaneers’ only win in that stretch came against the Dallas Cowboys.
The recovery and protective gear
Mayfield returned to full participation in practice this week and has been working with a specially designed glove on his right hand. The glove includes a restrictive plate or support on the back of the thumb to prevent it from bending the wrong way.
Tampa Bay Times reporting noted that the custom piece was crafted with help from a Tampa Bay Rays clubhouse attendant who modified a wide receiver glove. Mayfield has said the glove does not feel restrictive once he is used to it and that gripping and throwing feel fine.
Bowles noted that Mayfield practiced as if it were a normal week. The quarterback was still listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report standard for a player returning from a multi-week absence but all signs point to him starting.

Why this game matters
The Buccaneers enter the game at 1-5 and last in the NFC South. The Panthers sit at 3-2 and hold the division lead. This is Tampa Bay’s first divisional game of the season and a must-win opportunity to stay relevant in the race. Mayfield’s return brings experience and leadership back to an offense that has struggled for consistency.
He will be without some key pieces. Wide receiver Emeka Egbuka (concussion/foot) is out, as are right tackle Luke Goedeke (calf) and safety Antoine Winfield Jr. (rib). Mayfield will likely lean on other targets and a run-heavy approach early as he eases back in with the protective glove.

Mayfield, a two-time Pro Bowler, has made a career of playing through adversity. At 31, this is the first significant injury absence of his career that forced him to miss multiple games. He has spoken about the frustration of the slow healing process and the desire to be out there with his teammates. The Buccaneers will hope his return stabilizes the offense and sparks a turnaround as they begin the divisional slate.
Sunday’s game at Bank of America Stadium offers an early test. If Mayfield’s thumb holds up and the supporting cast can execute, Tampa Bay has a chance to climb back into the NFC South conversation. For now, the focus is simple: the starting quarterback is back.
