Zheng Qinwen pulled off another incredible comeback to dump Iga Swiatek out of the US Open on Monday, winning 7-5 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals. The Chinese qualifier was 0-5 down in the first set before roaring back.

  

The Olympic gold medallist came through qualifying during a rough patch in her career but looks back to her best in New York. She beat a player who had won 7 of their previous 8 meetings.

Zheng seems to thrive under pressure. She came back from 0-5 in the decider in round 3 this week, and did it again on Arthur Ashe. She saved three set points as 2022 champion Swiatek grew visibly frustrated.

She plays her best tennis when she’s cornered. After fighting back from 5-0 down in the third round, Zheng produced more magic at Arthur Ashe Stadium, erasing three set points while Swiatek’s frustration mounted.

Zheng’s comebacks are becoming a habit. She recovered from 0-5 in the third round, and repeated the trick against Swiatek, saving three set points to the clear annoyance of the 2022 US Open winner.

Crunching The Numbers

Swiatek called for the trainer in the third game of the second set for treatment on her left thigh. She returned to court and showed no clear signs of discomfort.

Zheng broke in game seven with a backhand winner down the line and finished the match on match point No.4. It left Swiatek in tears, just as she was after losing to Zheng in the Olympic semis two years ago.

“I have to say I start the match not so well and after little by little I found my rhythm,” Zheng said. A long-standing right elbow problem forced her to go under the knife last year.

 

“I just focused point by point and little by little I started to play better tennis,” she added.

  

Zheng will now meet either Naomi Osaka or Elena Rybakina for a place in the semi-finals.
