Jak Jones pulled off the biggest win of his career on Sunday night in Cheltenham, beating Mark Selby 10-6 in the British Open final.

The Welshman proved he can handle the big occasions after knocking out Judd Trump 6-3 in the semis on Saturday, then went on to outclass a four-time world champion in the showpiece.

Jak Jones secured the biggest title of his career with a 10-6 victory over Mark Selby in the British Open final in Cheltenham on Sunday.

After beating Judd Trump 6-3 in the semi-finals on Saturday, the Welshman showed his nerve again by outplaying four-time world champion Selby in the final.

  

The final was tied at 5-5 before Jones took control, winning 5 of the last 6 frames to claim the Clive Everton Trophy and the £100,000 winner’s cheque.

 

Selby, who came into the final with a 27-12 record in ranking finals, had to settle for £45,000 as runner-up. His experience in the closing stages counted for nothing against a Jones who never wavered.

It caps a stunning start to the season for the 33-year-old from Cwmbran, who picked up his first ranking title at the Championship League in July.

The win pushes him up from 31st to 22nd in the Johnstone's Paint World Rankings, and to 3rd on the one-year list, a huge rise for someone who spent years hovering outside the top 32.

Jones burst onto the scene as a teenager, winning the European Under-19 title in 2010. But getting to the top has been a long road.  

It’s taken years for him to match his natural talent with the right game and mentality. His run to the World Championship final last year, where he lost to Kyren Wilson, proved how much he’d developed.

Jones isn’t just a player for the odd upset anymore. He’s now a real contender in any tournament, and that’s shifted the balance in snooker.
