Injured Rybakina retires against Swiatek in Cincinnati quarter-final...
World No.2 Elena Rybakina was forced to retire from her Cincinnati Open quarter-final against Iga Swiatek on Thursday, stopping while down 4-1 in the first set.
The Kazakh appeared to hurt her left heel and could barely put weight on it. After a quick treatment from her physio, she played one more point before calling it quits.
With the US Open just 10 days away, Rybakina’s injury sends Iga Swiatek into a Cincinnati semi-final against No.3 seed Jessica Pegula, who beat Amanda Anisimova 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(4).
A run to the Cincinnati final would have taken two-time Grand Slam champion Rybakina to world No.1 for the first time, with Aryna Sabalenka having lost in the round of 16.
