The Dallas Mavericks announced on Friday that they have bought out Klay Thompson’s contract. Multiple reports say the 36-year-old guard will now sign with the Miami Heat.
The 36-year-old American won four titles with Golden State before arriving in Dallas last July as part of a six-team trade.
Thompson is a career 40.9% three-point shooter. In 13 NBA seasons he has averaged 18.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists.
In two seasons with Dallas, Thompson played 141 games and averaged 12.9 points while shooting 38.7% from three-point range.
“Klay is one of the great players and competitors of his generation, and we are grateful for everything he brought to the Mavericks organization,” Mavericks president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri said in a statement.
“We have tremendous respect for Klay and all that he has accomplished throughout his career, and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”
Dallas finished 26-56 last season. Thompson reportedly told team officials he wanted to leave for a contender, and he will get that chance in Miami.
Miami also made headlines last month by acquiring Greek star big man Giannis Antetokounmpo from Milwaukee in a trade.
Klay Thompson plans to sign a two-year, nearly $13 million deal with the Miami Heat after clearing waivers, with a player option in the second season, sources tell ESPN. https://t.co/M08ge0KuMz

In January, Thompson passed Damian Lillard for fourth on the NBA’s all-time three-pointers list. He now has 2,899 made threes.
