Mitchell Starc and Shoriful Islam stole the show with six-wicket hauls as Bangladesh hit back to keep Australia in check on a wild day one of the second Test on Saturday.
18 wickets tumbled across three action-packed sessions on the lively Mackay pitch. Australia reached 165-8 at stumps with a 101-run lead, after dismissing Bangladesh for just 64 in the first innings.
All-rounder Cameron Green was unbeaten on 51, with nightwatchman Nathan Lyon on 10 at stumps.
Recalled paceman Shoriful Islam marked his return with a maiden Test five-wicket haul, having missed the Darwin Test with a hamstring strain.
With Australia down 1-0 in the two-Test series and under pressure after a nine-wicket loss in Darwin, captain Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to bowl first on a Gabba-style surface.
Starc was superb with the new ball, taking 6-12 including the first five wickets in just 22 deliveries.
The 36-year-old Starc produced a masterclass to bowl Bangladesh out just after lunch, but Najmul Hossain Shanto’s side hit back thanks to Shoriful, who ended the day with 6-35.
Shoriful ripped through Australia’s top order, dismissing opener Travis Head for 22 and struggling No.3 Marnus Labuschagne for 4, before trapping Steve Smith lbw for 44 to break a 77-run stand with Green.
