Spain thrash Saudi Arabia 4-0, Yamal shines as De La Fuente’s side bounce back...
Spain sent a statement in their World Cup chase with a 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia in Atlanta. The result extended their unbeaten streak to 12 games - 8 wins and 4 draws.
After drawing Cape Verde in their opener, Luis de la Fuente wasted no time bringing Lamine Yamal straight back into the starting lineup.
Lamine Yamal, just 18, was electric from kickoff and changed Spain’s attack completely. He got his reward in the first 10 minutes, sliding in at the back post to finish Oyarzabal’s perfect cross.
Spain were in full control against a stunned Saudi side. The Saudis collapsed on themselves when a corner wasn’t cleared properly, and Oyarzabal pounced to tap in and make it 2-0 for the European champs.
The match was basically over after 23 minutes. Oyarzabal reacted fastest again in the box and turned in Olmo’s flick at the back post. By then the Green Falcons were already wondering what went wrong, and the ref hadn’t even called the first water break yet.
Spain didn’t let up for a second in the first half. Oyarzabal should’ve had his hat-trick too when Al Owais played the ball straight to him. He chipped the keeper and aimed for the empty net, but his cheeky effort bounced off the crossbar.
The break at halftime didn’t slow Spain down. They made it 4-0 within five minutes of the restart, though this one came with a bit of luck.
Cucurella smashed a shot that forced Al-Owais into a good save. But his relief was short-lived - the rebound hit Hassan Tambakti and bounced straight into his own net.
Taking off Yamal, Oyarzabal, and Pedri did take some sting out of Spain’s attack. But with the job already done, De la Fuente had the freedom to rest his key players.
