Ivory Coast stun Ecuador 1-0 at World Cup thanks to Diallo’s late heroics...
Ivory Coast shocked Ecuador with a 90th-minute winner to start their 2026 World Cup Group E run. The 1-0 win ended La Tricolor’s 19-match unbeaten streak.
After beating France in a friendly earlier this month, Ivory Coast came out firing. Bazoumana Toure nearly scored early with a calm shot that forced Hernan Galindez into a full-stretch save.
That early chance was just one of several good openings in a fast first half. Ecuador also hit the woodwork twice around the hydration break, testing Yahia Fofana’s goal.
John Yeboah almost made Sebastian Beccacece’s high press pay when he pounced on Emmanuel Agbadou’s loose touch outside the box and slammed a left-foot shot off the crossbar. Minutes later, Pedro Vite’s clever through ball sent Alan Minda clear, but he also struck the same crossbar.
The crossbar was still a problem after halftime, but now for Ivory Coast. Elye Wahi struck it first-time after Yan Diomande set him up, and the ball bounced away instead of in.
Ecuador survived that Ivory Coast spell and found their spark again. Gonzalo Plata tested the keeper with a powerful shot that fired up the big Ecuadorian crowd in Philadelphia.
Ecuador couldn’t get past Fofana, and looked set for a point until Amad Diallo stunned them with a late winner.
Wilfried Singo burst forward from deep, drove into the box and cut it back for the Man United star. Diallo guided it past Galindez and ended Ecuador’s unbeaten run dating back to September 2024.
The win gives Ivory Coast momentum heading into a tough game vs four-time World Cup champs Germany. For La Tri, there’s no room for error now against debutants Curaçao if they want to avoid another group-stage exit like in Qatar.
