Taylor Fritz beats Alexander Zverev 7-6, 4-6, 7-5 at Halle Open semis...
Taylor Fritz ended Alexander Zverev’s Halle Open run in the semis Saturday, beating the French Open champ 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-5. Frances Tiafoe then eased past Daniel Altmaier to set up an all-American final.
World No. 3 Zverev was a Halle finalist in 2016 and 2017, but he struggled against Fritz. The German came in having lost his last six matches to the American.
Zverev started well and grabbed an early break, but Fritz fought back to level it and push the set to a tiebreak. The German took the tiebreak 7-4.
Fritz flipped the match in set two. He won 12 points in a row to seize momentum and force a decider.
The third set stayed tight until Fritz struck late. A final break was enough to close it out and send him through to the final.
Fritz fired 19 aces and won 87% of points behind his first serve. That ended Zverev’s 10-match winning run.
“I felt like I played a good tiebreak (in the first set) and I felt I got a little unlucky with some bounce and he played some really good points and took one on my serve, and that was it,” Fritz said.
“I felt like he was struggling with something. I am not sure what it was. I felt like I felt better than he did, so that was what I needed to tell myself to go to work.”
Tiafoe had no trouble with Germany’s Altmaier. He raced through the first set and closed out a 6-1, 6-3 win.
