Al Nassr were seconds from clinching the Saudi Pro League title until goalkeeper Bento scored a bizarre own goal in stoppage time, resulting in a 1-1 draw with Al Hilal and delaying Cristiano Ronaldo’s celebrations.
Jorge Jesus’ side can still win the league on May 21st if they beat Damac in the final round...
Al Nassr were seconds away from claiming their first league title since 2018/19 on Tuesday, but a shocking error from goalkeeper Bento silenced the stadium and delayed the celebrations.
In the 1-1 Riyadh derby, Jorge Jesus’ side had taken the lead through Simakan and looked set to seal it. Instead, a bizarre own goal by the Brazilian keeper in the dying seconds snatched victory away.
Cristiano Ronaldo was left to remove his championship sash as the dramatic finish unfolded, with the Portuguese star visibly frustrated on the bench.
Roberto Martinez, the national team coach, watched from the stands as Al Hilal started stronger and put Al Nassr under early pressure.
Just four minutes in, Karim Benzema blew a golden one-on-one chance against Bento, sending an early warning to Al Nassr’s title hopes. The French striker thought he’d opened the scoring in the 18th minute, but VAR spotted Sergej Milinkovic-Savic offside in the build-up and wiped the goal off the board.
Rúben Neves was a defensive menace all half, tracking Ronaldo and João Félix closely and even throwing himself in front of a certain goal-bound strike from the former Barcelona man.
The game turned scrappy as the half-hour mark neared, with the referee pulling out three yellow cards in under 10 minutes to bring the rising tension under control.
With Ronaldo and Joao Felix contained, Sadio Mane stepped up to try and create something for Al Nassr. The hydration break then changed the flow of the match.
After a defender intercepted Félix’s pass intended for Ronaldo, the resulting corner sparked chaos in the box. Mohamed Simakan capitalized and fired home to give Al Hilal the lead.
Ronaldo tried to respond minutes later with a long-range effort, but Bono pulled off a brilliant save to keep Al Nassr a goal down.
Deep into stoppage time, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic made a costly error and handed the ball to Kingsley Coman. The Frenchman went one-on-one with the keeper but struck the post, ignoring an unmarked Ronaldo beside him.
At the restart, Ronaldo blazed over from a promising position inside the box, then played in Félix for a shot that the Al Hilal defense quickly blocked.
As time wore on, the pace dropped and injuries began to take their toll. Brozović went off hurt for Al Nassr, while Al Hilal made a triple change that included taking Benzema off by decision.
With 10 minutes remaining, Ronaldo was substituted for Al-Hamdan to a roar from the crowd, as Al Nassr turn their focus to Saturday’s AFC Champions League 2 final against Gamba Osaka. Jorge Jesus responded by shoring up his side to hold onto the lead.
Even with eight minutes of stoppage time, it looked like nothing could deny Al Nassr the title - until disaster struck.
On the final play, a long throw into the box saw Bento rush out, collide with Inigo Martinez, and bundle the ball into his own net. The bizarre own goal stunned the stadium and left Ronaldo visibly emotional on the bench.

It was a crushing finish in Riyadh. Ronaldo, Joao Felix, and Jorge Jesus had their title celebrations cut short in the final seconds, and the Saudi Pro League crown remains undecided.
Despite controlling the game and taking the lead through Simakan, Bento’s mistake forces Al Nassr to delay the party. The dramatic ending keeps the title race wide open.
Al Nassr can still clinch the championship if they beat Damac in the final matchday on May 21st. Before that, they face Gamba Osaka in the AFC Champions League 2 final.
