Xabi Alonso takes over at Chelsea after Real Madrid exit

Xabi Alonso arrives after a short spell at Real Madrid and will aim to lift Chelsea from ninth in the table.

Chelsea face Tottenham next as they fight to keep European qualification alive...

The club confirmed the appointment in a statement, saying they were pleased to welcome the former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen manager to take charge of the men’s team.

“The Spaniard will begin his role on July 1st, 2026, having agreed a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge.”

“His appointment reflects the Club’s belief in his broad set of experiences, coaching quality and game model, leadership attributes, character and integrity, which were key to the decision to ask him to help lead the next phase of Chelsea’s journey.

“He is regarded not only as an outstanding football coach, but also as a proven leader and partner across a number of areas essential to the demands of driving the team.”

Alonso is no stranger to the Premier League, having played for Liverpool during his career. He becomes the fifth permanent manager at Stamford Bridge since Todd Boehly took over, arriving after Liam Rosenior was dismissed earlier this season.

He left Bayer Leverkusen with a strong reputation after delivering silverware, but his spell at Real Madrid was less successful. Alonso joined the club last summer, but reports of friction over his approach surfaced quickly. He was let go in January following defeat to Barcelona in the Supercopa de España.

Despite that exit, Alonso’s reputation remained high. Chelsea moved quickly to secure him, even with speculation linking him to a return to Liverpool as a potential replacement for Arne Slot.

Speaking about his appointment, Alonso told the official club website: “Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in world football, and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club.

“From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.

“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club, and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.”

Chelsea sit ninth in the Premier League with two matches left to play, and face the possibility of missing out on European qualification for next season.

Their recent form hasn’t helped. They lost the FA Cup final to Manchester City on Saturday, and return to action on Tuesday night with a London derby against Tottenham Hotspur.
