Aryna Sabalenka Hit by Injury Concern After Rome Exit Ahead of French Open
After a strong hardcourt season with titles in Brisbane, Indian Wells and Miami, Sabalenka has lost two of her last three matches on clay and now faces a fitness race before Paris.

Aryna Sabalenka’s build-up to the French Open hit a snag after a third-round loss to Sorana Cirstea at the Italian Open. The world No. 1 now faces a race to recover from an injury concern with the Grand Slam set to start later this month.
Sabalenka required medical attention late in her match against Cirstea on Saturday before going down 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. It marks her second loss in three outings, following a quarter-final exit to Hailey Baptiste at the Madrid Open last month.
“I feel like I didn't play well from the beginning till the end. I started really well, but I dropped the level,” four-time Grand Slam champion Sabalenka said in Rome.
“I felt like my body was limiting me from performing at the highest level. She stepped in and played incredible tennis. She didn't really give me many opportunities.
“That was a tough one. But I guess we never lose; we only learn, so it's okay.”
Sabalenka’s recent struggles on clay come after a dominant stretch on hardcourts, where she won the Brisbane title, finished runner-up at the Australian Open, and took consecutive trophies in Indian Wells and Miami.
The Belarusian said she’s hoping to regain full fitness before the French Open begins in Paris on May 24th. She’ll return to Roland Garros having lost last year’s final to Coco Gauff.
“I'd say that probably it's like my lower back, connected to the hip, which limited my full rotation,” the 28-year-old added.
“I guess we're just going to have some days off. We're going to spend it on recovery. That's the plan for now.”
