Spalletti Praises Juventus' heart and desire despite draw

Juventus extends winless streak in Champions League, new manager Luciano Spalletti cites team's heart and desire as positives.

“The reaction we got right from the start gave me hope, it seemed as though the whole stadium understood the team's...”

Juventus failed to secure a victory in their fourth consecutive Champions League match, drawing 1-1 with Sporting. Despite the stalemate, new manager Luciano Spalletti expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance.

Spalletti praised his team's heart and desire, stating, “I'm pleased with the performance of the team. We showed that we have character, and the guys showed their desire to win the game.” He added that if Juventus continues to play like this, they will win plenty of matches.

Juventus will travel to Bodo/Glimt on November 25 for their next Champions League game, looking to build on their recent performance and secure a much-needed win.

The new coach, who signed a short-term deal to rescue Juventus, secured a Serie A win over Cremonese in his first game in charge. However, his team fell short in their Champions League match against Sporting CP, failing to secure a win on home soil.

Juventus took the lead through Maximiliano Araujo's early goal, but Dusan Vlahovic equalized with a header in the 34th minute. The match ultimately ended in a 1-1 draw, leaving Juventus with three points from their four games.

“I'm pleased with the performance of the team. We showed that we have character, and the guys showed their desire to win the game,” said former Italy boss Spalletti. “If we play like this going forward, we'll win plenty of matches.

“The reaction we got right from the start gave me hope, it seemed as though the whole stadium understood the team's approach well, and that's a good sign.”

Juventus midfielder Teun Koopmeiners believes his team showed promising moments against Sporting but acknowledged areas for improvement. He felt more comfortable in a deeper role, which allowed him to dictate the pace of the game. Koopmeiners' performance was notable as he worked tirelessly to break up Sporting's attacks and provide a solid base for Juventus' midfield. With some fine-tuning, Koopmeiners and Juventus can build on this foundation to achieve better results in the future.

“I feel much better in this position, because I am not a forward who plays with his back to goal, where I played in other games,” he told Sky Sports Italia. “I told Spaletti and the representatives of the club that too.”

Juventus's next Champions League fixture after the Sporting CP match will be against Bodo/Glimt on November 25, 2025, at the Aspmyra Stadion in Bodo, Norway.
