“I went a break down, had some chances in the first set but couldn't use them. He was serving very well...”

Jannik Sinner claimed the Vienna Open title, overcoming Alexander Zverev in a thrilling final. The Italian star trailed by a set but mounted a stunning comeback to win 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

The victory marked Sinner's fourth title of the season and 22nd of his career. Sinner had dropped his first set of the tournament earlier in the competition but showed resilience to bounce back and clinch the win.

The victory marked his second triumph in Vienna, following his 2023 win, and extended his unbeaten streak on indoor hard courts to 21 matches. However, the top seed faced a tough challenge from world No. 3 Zverev, who took the only break of the first set to gain the upper hand. Zverev had won four of their previous seven meetings, making the match a closely contested one.

Sinner bounced back to take control in the second set, racing to a 3-0 lead and forcing the match into a decider. Despite Zverev saving two break points in the fifth game of the third set, Sinner maintained his pressure.

The Italian battled through a thigh issue, which had caused him to retire with cramp at the Shanghai Masters earlier in the season. Despite the discomfort, Sinner held his nerve to secure the win.

“It was such a difficult start in this final for me,” said Sinner.

“I went a break down, had some chances in the first set but couldn't use them. He was serving very well, but I just tried to stick there mentally and play my best tennis when it came.”

Sinner seized the initiative at 5-5 in the deciding set, striking a powerful backhand down the line to create a break opportunity. He followed up with a hard-fought rally win to secure the crucial break.

The Italian then sealed the victory with a routine hold to clinch the title. This win marks Sinner's fourth title of the season, following his triumphs at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and Beijing.

“The third set was a bit of a rollercoaster, but I was feeling the ball very well at times, so I tried to push and I'm very happy of course to win another title,” Sinner added.

“It's very special.”
