Senator Joel-Onowakpo Urges Serenity And Condemns The Deaths Of Soldiers In Delta
The horrific killing of sixteen soldiers at Okuama Community, Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State, has been condemned by Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, the senator who represents Delta South Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
In a statement he signed in response to the senseless killings of Nigerian soldiers on a peace mission, Senator Joel-Onowakpo argued that the situation had been handled too harshly.
Thus, the Senate Committee on Defence's Vice Chairman expressed his condolences to the armed forces and the bereaved families of the fallen servicemen.
He emphasized that the security authorities must pursue the perpetrators of the horrific crime, even as he called for a comprehensive probe into the far-reaching causes of the situation that resulted in the needless deaths of innocent soldiers.
Senator Joel-Onowakpo asked for the prompt intervention of both the state and federal governments to prevent further escalation of the issue. Senator Joel-Onowakpo expressed sympathy to the families of those who may have lost loved ones due to the crisis.
He highlighted that in order to prevent the deaths of defenseless women and children in the Okuama neighborhood who might not be aware of the individuals responsible for the heinous deed, the military must strategically use intelligence in the hunt for the masterminds.
Recall that there was a land dispute in Delta State between Okuama Community in Ughelli South Local Government Area and Okoloba Community in Bomadi Local Government Area.
It was thought that the soldiers, prior to being ambushed and killed, were on a peace mission in the town due to escalating tensions from the long-standing land dispute.
