Ogun Assembly Crisis: 'Ogun Lawmakers Have Right To Choose Their Leader' — Gov Dapo Abiodun
Governor Abiodun speaks out on the Ogun Assembly crisis, asserting that lawmakers have the authority to select the leader.
Governor Dapo Abiodun has spoken out about the crisis roiling the Ogun State House of Assembly, 48 hours after the assembly's leadership changed.
Olakunle Oluomo, the former Speaker of the Assembly, was overtaken by the crisis on Tuesday, leading to his impeachment and the election of Oludaisi Elemide in his place.
In response to the events, the governor and the Assembly agreed that the lawmakers should be free to select any individual they wish to lead the legislative branch of the government.
The governor also acknowledged that the Assembly's crisis had persisted for some time in a statement released on Thursday and signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Kayode Akinmade.
“There had been internal wrangling in the Assembly that had persisted and degenerated despite several interventions.
“It is the prerogative of members of the House of Assembly to choose their leadership in line with the constitution and the law guiding the conduct of the Assembly.”
Recall that on Tuesday, the former Speaker was impeached due to allegations of intransigence, indecisiveness, and haughtiness. conceit, a bad leadership style, embezzlement of funds, and inciting members against one another.
However, the governor clarified that the government was collaborating with the All Progressives Congress, or APC, with the goal of resolving all contentious issues.
The statement added, “Working with the leadership of our Party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Government intends to see all the contending issues resolved in a democratic, fair, and just manner.
“The Ogun State Government notes that the Honourable Members have openly stated that their grouse is not with the Governor, whom they again pledged their loyalty to.
“Given that the Ogun electorate gave us a mandate to represent their best interests and deliver democratic dividends that will significantly improve their well-being, the Ogun State Government, along with the Party leadership, have intervened to ensure that whatever disagreement members have is resolved peacefully and amicably.”
