Airport Official Arrested Over Attempt To Smuggle Drug Onboard Flight

FAAN responds to a report that airport employees were observed at MMIA, Lagos, slipping a package containing drugs into a man's travel bag

According to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the man who was harassed by a traveler in a widely shared video who tried to use him to traffic drugs is not affiliated with FAAN.

He works for a company that provides aviation services on airport property. FAAN's Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, made the following statement on Wednesday in Ikeja. She continued by saying that the officer had been detained and turned over to security personnel to be questioned after attempting to pass a package through the passenger who was traveling quickly to Accra.

The officer being mistreated in the video is not an employee of FAAN, the organization would like to clarify. According to her, he is an employee of an aviation services company.

Orah explained that the employee was said to have approached the passenger to help him to convey a parcel through the flight. “When the passenger became sceptical, he raised an alarm, alleging that he was being set up for drug trafficking.”

“The attention of FAAN has been drawn to a video circulating in the social media where a supposed employee of the Authority was being slapped by a passenger for trying to use him to traffic drug. It has been identified that the incident took place at a boarding gate of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja on Tuesday.

“The employee was immediately arrested for questioning. The passenger involved has since departed to Accra while the medication with the name "New age glucosamine chondroitin sulphate complex' has been taken to the NDLEA for further investigation, FAAN is dedicated to a dryg-free society and has zero tolerance for dra peddling through the nation's airports,” Orah stressed.
