Egyptian authorities have finally decided to let Nigerians fleeing the conflict in neighboring Sudan pass through their nation. Sudanese Airlines has ceased operations.
Egyptian authorities have finally decided to let Nigerians fleeing the conflict in neighboring Sudan pass through their nation.
Because Sudanese airspace was closed, the federal government arranged for buses to transport Nigerians to Egypt, where they would catch flights back home.
However, Nigerians have been stranded at the Egyptian border due to the country's refusal to allow free passage despite repeated requests.
However, on Monday afternoon, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), stated that Egypt had agreed to open its border following President Muhammadu Buhari's intervention.
She stated that before reaching a solution, the Nigerian president went out to his Egyptian counterpart, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
However, Dabiri-Erewa stated that Egypt agreed to open the border under strict conditions.
"The border has just been opened, (with stringent conditions) after President Buhari's intervention with the Egyptian President. So, the processing of evacuees by the Nigerian Embassy in Egypt will begin," Dabiri-Erewa said in a statement.
