Filipino tennis sensation Alexandra Eala exited the Ningbo Open in the Round of 16 on Thursday, falling in straight sets to Diana Shnaider.

World No. 13 Shnaider of Russia claimed a 7-5, 6-4 victory and will next meet promising American teenager Iva Jovic in the quarterfinals in eastern China.

The 21-year-old Eala made history in August as the first Filipino to win a WTA title and usually draws large crowds of supporters from her home country.

However, after dispatching France's Diane Parry in straight sets in the previous round in Ningbo, the world No. 20 faced a much tougher challenge in Shnaider.

The 22-year-old Russian, chasing a sixth WTA singles title, relied on her greater power to secure the opening set in just over 50 minutes.

Eala battled to stay alive as the second set proved to be a tighter contest.

Shnaider piled pressure on Eala's serve in the ninth game before breaking to lead 5-4, then held firm to wrap up the win in one hour and 55 minutes.

Eighteen-year-old Jovic upset two-time Grand Slam finalist Jasmine Paolini of Italy 6-4, 6-3.
