AGF suffered an agonising late defeat against the Belgian league leaders in the Conference League, as a goal four minutes from time from striker Hyllarion Goore sealed a 1-0 win for KAA Gent over the Danish champions in their opening game of the league phase.

AGF's first match in the Conference League league phase looked on course to be a success for much of the game, but it ultimately unravelled at the end.

With four minutes left, Gent's Hyllarion Goore headed home the only goal of the game to secure a 1-0 win for the Belgian side.

Before that, AGF had actually had luck on their side. Gent struck the post and forced several big saves from Mads Hedenstad, who had looked set to be the hero of the match.

The Belgian league leaders are still unbeaten this season and, on paper, are one of the toughest opponents AGF will face in this phase of the competition.

Even so, AGF coach Jakob Poulsen chose to start with several fringe players.

Key figures such as Frederik Tingager, Magnus Knudsen, Tobias Bech and Frederik Emmery were among those rested, although the latter was forced into action early on.

Just over 15 minutes in, Mikael Anderson twisted his ankle and limped off the pitch. The Aarhus side had made a decent start and came close to taking the lead, but Daniel Gretarsson cleared a header off the line.

Gent won their duels and were more accurate in their passing than the AGF side, who surrendered possession in some dangerous areas.

The visitors went into the break at 0-0, but their problems were far from over. Only a superb save from Hedenstad prevented striker Ibrahima Cisse from putting Gent 1-0 ahead ten minutes into the second half.

And a quarter of an hour later, the woodwork denied the Ivorian. The pressure eased slightly afterwards, but the visitors still struggled to put more than a few passes together.

In the end, they were punished. Substitute Goore rose unmarked in the box and guided the ball past Hedenstad, who dived towards the post in vain.
