Maresca: My Job To Make Foden One Of England's Best Again
| Maresca vows to help Foden reclaim best form at Man City |
Phil Foden is back scoring for Manchester City while Enzo Maresca makes history. But City's strong start under Guardiola's successor is clouded by 100+ financial charges threat.
Man City boss Maresca backs Foden to return to top form...
Enzo Maresca says it is his responsibility as Manchester City manager to help Phil Foden become one of the best players in England again.
Maresca said reviving Foden's best form is part of his job after the England international ended his lengthy goal drought.
Foden had gone 10 months without scoring before finding the net in City's 3-2 victory over Ipswich last weekend, then followed it up with a Champions League hat-trick in Tuesday's 5-1 thrashing of AEK Athens.
The 26-year-old claimed every major individual honour for the Premier League's best player in the 2023/24 season after scoring 27 goals.
But Foden, who has spoken openly about his struggles with mental health issues, has not reached those heights over the past two seasons.
“Since we started I sat down with Phil two or three times, especially at the beginning. Just to show him, I don't know if love is the right word to use, but just to show him how important he is,” said Maresca, who took charge of City in June.
“I said many times that I know Phil from years ago so I know how for different reasons, the last few years it was not good enough.
“When you have more players like Phil available, you are a better team because again it's a matter of improving players. If you improve the players, you improve the team.
“So for me, I think it's my duty to try to help Phil to be again one of the best players in England.“
Aside from a 4-2 Champions League loss to holders Paris Saint-Germain, Maresca has enjoyed a flawless start to the daunting challenge of replacing Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium.

The Italian has become the first manager in history to win his opening seven Premier League matches at a new club.
However, City's impressive form has been overshadowed by the threat of severe punishment for alleged widespread breaches of Premier League financial rules.
A significant points deduction, which could result in relegation, appears likely unless City succeed in appealing a guilty verdict on more than 100 charges of misconduct.
Maresca said the mood inside the dressing room has stayed upbeat despite the uncertainty hanging over the club.
“In any club, when you lose important players, many important players, and you lose the manager after 10 years, it always takes time to compete again,” he said on Thursday.
“But this organisation last summer changed many important players, changed the manager after 10 years and we are competing at the moment.”

City head to Aston Villa on Saturday, lifted by the return of Erling Haaland.
The Norwegian, who has netted 12 times in nine outings this season, sat out the AEK Athens game after sustaining a foot injury against Ipswich.
Matheus Nunes, Mateo Kovacic and Nico O'Reilly remain doubtful through injury.
