Liiga: Ässät Go Top, Ilves Lose And Tappara Streak Ends
| Ässät take Liiga lead after victory in Helsinki as Ilves falter |
Ässät are the new leaders of Finland's Liiga after beating Jokerit 4-2 in Helsinki, taking advantage of Ilves' 3-1 defeat at HPK as Tappara's winning run came to an end against Lukko.
Ässät the new Liiga leaders with win over Jokerit as Ilves lose to Hameenlinna...
Ässät have moved top of Finland's Liiga after a 4-2 victory over Jokerit in Helsinki, while Ilves collapsed in the third period at Hameenlinna. Elsewhere, Tappara's recent good run was halted by Lukko.
Ilves appeared to have put a two-game slump behind them with a win over Jokerit last time out, but their issues run deeper after a 3-1 defeat at Hameenlinna. The hosts bounced back perfectly from their loss to SaiPa, claiming a fifth win in six games to climb to eighth.
The game looked to be going differently after 40 minutes, with Ilves ahead thanks to Benjamin Korhonen's powerplay goal. But after Vili Alitalo levelled nine minutes into the third period, HPK took control, Oliver Kopiloff putting them in front before Roope Vesterinen sealed it with a third in the final minute.

That result gave Ässät the opportunity to move two points clear of Ilves at the top, and the Pori side took it, securing a second straight victory with a 4-2 win at Jokerit, who remain four points from safety after back-to-back defeats.
After a goalless first period, Ässät took control in the second with goals from Simon Pinard, Sakari Kostilainen and Alexander Kim, while the hosts could only respond once through Antti Kalapudas. Patrik Virta gave Jokerit hope midway through the third, only for Cameron Hillis to restore the two-goal cushion.

Tappara claimed a Champions League win in midweek, but their four-game winning run in the league is over after a 2-1 home defeat to Lukko. The result sees them drop to 11th, while the visitors move up to third, four points off the top, despite their inconsistent form.
Oliver Suvanto gave Tappara a first-period lead that could have been bigger had Benjamin Rautiainen not missed a penalty, and that proved costly. Alex Beaucage set up Petro Seppala to equalise in the second before turning from provider to scorer, netting the winner early in an ill-tempered third period.

Third place was up for grabs for Lukko as JYP fell to a 5-4 overtime defeat to Kärpät. Alexander True scored twice to put JYP 2-0 ahead, but the visitors came back to lead 3-2 by the end of the second period. The hosts went back in front early in the third, only for Kasper Soini to level again and force overtime, where Eetu Koivistoinen grabbed his second of the game to win it for the Oulu side, who sit sixth but are level on 24 points with fourth-placed JYP.

Three successive three-point wins have lifted Vaasan Sport into the top 12. Their latest victims were Pelicans - the side they knocked out of the play-off places - with a 2-1 victory, a second straight loss for the Lahti side. Anton Straka and Luke Grainger had Sport 2-0 up inside 14 minutes, and although Anton Kettunen pulled one back with 11 minutes left, the visitors held on for the narrow win.
A second win in a row also moved TPS Turku above their opponents, as their 4-2 victory over Kiekko-Espoo saw them climb to eighth and drop K-Espoo back to 10th. Both sides had held the lead before reaching the midway point at 2-2, but goals from Jeremi Virtanen and Joel Mättä pulled TPS clear....
