Cadiou penalty earns Lorient shock win over Monaco...

For the first time in 21 attempts, Lorient made it back-to-back Ligue 1 wins with a 1-0 victory over AS Monaco at Stade du Moustoir - Yves Allainmat, a result which meant the visitors were unable to finish the weekend top of the table.

A cagey opening from both sides produced just one off-target effort inside the first 15 minutes, when Ansu Fati could only direct his header over the crossbar.

With possession fairly even, much of the action took place in a congested midfield, with plenty of square balls or passes back to the defence. As a spectacle it was a tough watch, and Matthis Abline's wayward 25-yard effort into the crowd summed up how poor the game had been.

Monaco left gaps behind the full-backs to be exploited as they started to push forward, and while Lorient's Arsene Kouassi did just that on several occasions, he was unable to pick out a teammate with his final ball.

Ibrahima Balde's sublime skill carved out an excellent opportunity on the half-hour mark, but as he pulled the trigger his effort was blocked. Three further efforts from the visitors before half-time suggested dominance, but none came close to breaking the deadlock in a tedious encounter.

Monaco flew out of the blocks after the restart, creating three chances inside the first two minutes. Lorient's physicality kept them in the contest, though, with Montassar Talbi and Nathaniel Adjei who won nine duels between them by full-time forming an impenetrable wall that the visitors simply could not find a way through.

The hosts got their reward on the hour mark when Flavio Nazinho clumsily brought down Dembo Sylla inside the box. Lorient were awarded a penalty, and Noah Cadiou made no mistake, firing a confident right-footed strike past Lukas Hradecky.

Forced to chase the game, Monaco pushed forward and dominated the latter stages, but their lack of cutting edge was telling - with 10 minutes remaining, only three of their 13 attempts had hit the target. It was Lorient who actually came closest to the next goal, when Sylla's strike from distance crashed back off the upright.

The win means Lorient still have only four victories from their last 11 competitive home matches, but the three points see them climb six places in the standings. Monaco, meanwhile, remain fourth on 14 points - level with the three teams directly above them.[D3][L4]
