Bob Armah won a penalty and scored as KuPS beat VPS 2-0 to return to winning ways in the Veikkausliiga

Jaime Moreno's early penalty and a slick finish from Bob Armah inspired KuPS to a 2-0 win over VPS, ending their two-game losing streak and putting them just one point behind Veikkausliiga leaders Inter Turku.

KuPS have reignited their Veikkausliiga title challenge after returning to winning ways against VPS.

The Kuopio-based side bounced back from a two-game winless run to secure a crucial victory over Vaasan Palloseura.

The result moves KuPS to within a single point of leaders Inter Turku in what is turning into a tight three-way title race.

KuPS Back To Winning Ways With 2-0 Victory Over VPS To Close Gap At The Top

Back-to-back narrow defeats to AC Oulu and Inter Turku had seen KuPS slip from first to third in the Veikkausliiga, while a home loss to Trabzonspor in the UEFA Conference League in midweek did little to boost confidence ahead of the clash with VPS - a side that had just snapped a run of three straight defeats.

But it was VPS who showed early nerves, conceding a penalty inside the opening 10 minutes when Lassana Mane brought down Bob Armah, with Jaime Moreno stepping up to calmly convert from the spot.

Moreno and Armah continued to trouble the visitors later in the first half, with the Nicaraguan winning possession high up the pitch before Armah took over, driving to the edge of the area and exchanging a neat one-two with Moreno before calmly slotting home.

In the second half, Wilson Samake spurned a chance to drag VPS back into the contest, while Joslyn Luyeye-Lutumba failed to add extra gloss for KuPS, but the defending champions did enough to cut the gap to the top to just one point, remaining third behind HJK on goal difference. VPS sit sixth, three points adrift of Gnistan in the final European spot.
