Willem II have officially fired John Stegeman after winless return to Eredivisie, with club sitting last with just two points from nine games and league's worst defensive record of 26 goals conceded.
Willem II sack manager John Stegeman after winless Eredivisie start...
Stegeman, 50, took charge of Willem II ahead of the 2025-26 season and guided the Tilburg outfit back to the top flight after defeating FC Volendam on penalties in the promotion play-off final.
Willem II's return to the Eredivisie has not gone to plan, with the club failing to win any of their opening nine matches and collecting just two points. The Tricolores are rooted to the bottom of the table with the worst defensive record in the division, having shipped 26 goals.
Stegeman's departure marks Willem II's fifth managerial sacking in five years.
“Following promotion to the Eredivisie, our ambition was to continue working with John to further develop Willem II’s sporting programme. That is why this has been a difficult decision,” technical director Freek Heerkens said on the club website.
“Following a careful review and discussions amongst ourselves, we do not currently see sufficient prospects for continuing our collaboration. We would like to thank John for his dedication, the pleasant working relationship and his commitment to the club.”
Danny Schenkel and Pim Hendrix, the assistant managers, will take temporary charge following Stegeman's exit.
Willem II take on fellow promoted side Cambuur Leeuwarden next on Saturday, October 24, before travelling to Helmond Sport in the KNVB Beker next week.
