Feyenoord Chief Explains Why Saudi Move for Star Winger Hadj Moussa Failed
Feyenoord turned down a club-record €42.5m bid from Al Ittihad for Anis Hadj Moussa on deadline day after the Saudi club failed to provide a bank guarantee.
Feyenoord rejected record Al Ittihad offer for Hadj Moussa over missing bank guarantee...
Feyenoord director Robert Eenhoorn says details of Al Ittihad's bid for Anis Hadj Moussa set off alarm bells among the club's hierarchy.
Hadj Moussa had been expected to leave Feyenoord for Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad, who reportedly tabled a club-record €42.5m offer for the Algerian winger, with the player keen to make the move.
However, Feyenoord turned down the offer on deadline day after demanding a bank guarantee from Al Ittihad, which general manager Robert Eenhoorn confirmed in an interview with ESPN.
“In the first offer we received, the first term payment was 10 per cent of the total fee. That raised red flags,” Eenhoorn said.
“That's why we asked for the bank guarantee, which never came. So that was never serious, if you asked me.”
According to Saudi reports, Al Ittihad considered it “impossible” to freeze funds for the bank guarantee after already hitting their maximum offer for Hadj Moussa.
Alongside Hadj Moussa, right-back Givairo Read also came close to departing, with Roma said to be interested, but Feyenoord were keen to retain the young defender long-term.
“We felt that Read needed to play more matches again, that he still had more to give. You can see now that he’s playing a lot of matches and is a key player. He’s putting himself back in the spotlight. Ultimately, we simply couldn’t reach an agreement with the clubs,” Eenhoorn continued.
“If you have a Rembrandt and a Van Gogh hanging on your wall and you don’t sell them, they’ll still be hanging there. Their value on the market speaks for itself; I wouldn’t make too much of a fuss about it.”
