10-Man AC Oulu Stun Inter Turku With Late Winner To End Leaders' Unbeaten Run

AC Oulu Vs Inter Turku
10-man AC Oulu stun league leaders Inter Turku

IFK Mariehamn's 22-year stay in the Veikkausliiga is over after a 1-1 draw with relegation rivals Jaro, while HJK closed to within a point of leaders Inter Turku after a derby thrashing of Gnistan and a shock defeat for Inter against 10-man AC Oulu.

Jaro secure play-off spot as Mariehamn suffer relegation after survival draw...

2016 Veikkausliiga champions IFK Mariehamn have been relegated after 22 seasons in the Finnish top flight after being held to a draw by Jaro, who will now contest a relegation play-off. At the other end of the table, HJK have moved to within one point of the leaders after thrashing Gnistan in the Helsinki derby, while Inter Turku were beaten by AC Oulu.

Survival showdown ends in heartbreak for Mariehamn

There will be no representative from the Aland Islands in the 2027 Veikkausliiga after Mariehamn came up short in their direct survival battle against Jaro. Defeat for either side meant automatic relegation, but the hosts knew a draw would be enough to earn a second chance in the play-off.

After a nervy first half, the decisive moment arrived in the 64th minute when Fabian Ness drove through challenges to cut in from the left wing and lift a cross to the back post, which Ville Vuorinen tucked away to give Jaro a priceless lead.

Mariehamn were given hope again with 11 minutes remaining when Gergo Kocsis turned the ball into his own net, but with Jaro creating the majority of the better chances, the equaliser failed to spark the grandstand finish the visitors had hoped for, and Jaro held on to finish the season two points clear of Mariehamn.

It was a spirited fight from Mariehamn, who failed to win any of their first 19 games before winning all three of their final regular-season matches, but ultimately just one victory in five during the relegation group was not enough. Jaro will now face PK-35 over two legs for a place in next season's Veikkausliiga.

Inter slip up as Oulu snatch late winner

Inter Turku's four-game unbeaten run at the top of the table came to an end as they lost at home to Europe-chasing AC Oulu, despite the visitors finishing with 10 men. An upset was on the cards after half an hour when Camilo Triana found Rasmus Karjalainen, who turned and fired low into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

FC Inter looked to have turned the tide inside the final 16 minutes when Herman Sjogrell curled a superb strike in off the post and Oulu were reduced to 10 men after Miguel Santos was shown a straight red card, only for the away side to win it in added time. A floated ball into the area was met with a poor attempted clearing header, allowing Roope Riski to roll the ball back for Juuso Makelainen to strike and hand Oulu just a second win in seven games.

Borchers hat-trick fires HJK to within one point of leaders

HJK have endured plenty of difficult days against Helsinki neighbours Gnistan recently, but not this time, as the record champions cruised to a third straight win to move within a point of Inter Turku. No wins in four for Gnistan keeps them fourth for now, but their lead over Oulu has been cut to two points.

As so often of late, Mads Borchers was HJK's hero with a second-half hat-trick. For his first, he won the race to a ball over the top, benefited from a fortunate deflection off the goalkeeper and tapped into an empty net. Gnistan's afternoon soon worsened when Edmund Arko-Mensah was sent off for unsportsmanlike conduct, before Santeri Haarala doubled the lead on the hour mark.

Haarala then turned provider to set up Borchers' second, with the striker meeting a neat cutback to finish high into the net, before completing his treble and his eighth goal in just three games in added time.

Lahti finish top of relegation group in style

Lahti signed off for 2026 in fine style, finishing top of the relegation group despite this being their first win in four games. TPS, meanwhile, ended the campaign with four straight defeats, but still finished ninth. Oscar Haggstrom gave the visitors the lead, but Martim Augusto, Amir Belabid and Otso Koskinen all struck before the break to put Lahti in control, with Belabid and Koskinen both completing braces in the first 15 minutes of the second half to seal the rout.

Ilves end relegation group as top performers

Ilves were the best-performing side in the relegation group, picking up four wins and a draw, with their final victory coming at home to SJK, who had been unbeaten in the second stage of the season before today. Teemu Hytonen scored from the rebound after his penalty was saved, then Elias Tamminen added a second in the final seconds. Ilves finish eighth and SJK 10th.
