Frances Tiafoe beat Lorenzo Musetti 7-6(2), 7-5 on Friday to advance to the Cincinnati Open semi-finals, where he will face fellow American Brandon Nakashima with the US Open approaching.

The match lasted more than two hours and Tiafoe needed four match points to get past Musetti on a muggy Ohio evening, with thunderstorms nearby but play uninterrupted.

Looking to turn around a tough summer that included early losses in Washington and Montreal plus a wrist injury, Tiafoe played an aggressive match and hit 18 winners, closing it out with an ace.

Tiafoe leads Nakashima 6-1 in their head-to-head, but Nakashima comes in with momentum after fighting back from a break down in the third set to beat sixth seed and fellow American Taylor Fritz 7-6(9), 4-6, 6-3.

Nakashima has now made the semi-finals at consecutive Masters 1000 tournaments following his run in Montreal last week, marking another strong resurgence on North American hard courts ahead of the US Open later this month.
