Philadelphia’s chances of leveling their Eastern Conference semi-final series against New York took a major hit on Wednesday after Joel Embiid was ruled out due to injury.
Embiid is dealing with right hip soreness and a right ankle sprain, leaving the Sixers without their standout player who helped them upset the second-seeded Boston Celtics in the last round.
The announcement comes only hours before Philadelphia faces New York in Game 2 at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday evening.
New York controlled Game 1 of the best-of-seven series on Monday, cruising to a 137-98 victory. Embiid put up 14 points before exiting midway through the third quarter.
Earlier in April, Embiid had emergency appendix surgery but made it back for the final four games against Boston, averaging 28 points as Philadelphia battled back from a 3-1 deficit to advance.
