Clara Tauson’s struggles continued with a straight-sets loss in Strasbourg. Holmgren kept his French Open hopes alive with a dominant win over Jade.

A tough loss for Tauson against Cristian ends her Strasbourg run, while Holmgren moves one win from the French Open main draw after beating Jade...

Clara Tauson and August Holmgren had contrasting results in Strasbourg on Wednesday afternoon. Tauson’s difficult season continued as she lost 1-6, 5-7 to Romania’s Jaqueline Christian. Holmgren, meanwhile, moved one win away from a French Open qualifying spot after beating 17-year-old Frenchman Daniel Jade 6-3, 6-3.

The loss marked Tauson’s final match before the French Open, which starts Sunday in Paris.

Tauson entered in the second round after receiving a first-round bye, but the fourth seed fell to Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian 1-6, 5-7.

Tauson played poorly in the opening set and improved significantly in the second, yet it wasn’t enough to overcome world No. 33 Cristian.

The Dane has slipped to No. 21 after starting the year at No. 14, with the last few months disrupted by injuries, particularly to her back.

Those issues have forced her to withdraw from multiple events, and she was also unable to finish matches in Miami and Rome.

Wednesday marked the first time Tauson finished a match since 8 March, but she still came up short against Christian.

August Holmgren had a much better day and is now one win away from reaching the French Open main draw.

In the second round of qualifying, he beat 17-year-old French wild card Daniel Jade 6-3, 6-3.

Holmgren proved a level above the Frenchman, who sits 1447th in the world rankings.

His serve set the tone, giving him a clear advantage while he rarely faced pressure on his own service games.
